long-standing friend and client, Dave Cox, who previously commissioned,
Magic Carpet, the L26 and C26 classes, the L34 class, decided
he once again would like to build a wooden boat similar to the
L34 ( 90 built) but updated, and set up short handed cruising.
So we took the L34, filled the stern slightly, shortened the
bow overhang, and deepened the underbody slightly with more
rocker to accept more "cruising weight". We put the
mast slightly further forward (bigger main) and completely re-designed
the keel to be a wing bulb, more "cruisy" than the
L34, but deeper than the H34 keels. I designed the structure
round widely spaced ply webs / furniture which means very little
extra structure after putting on the strip planking. Very little
waste as the jig is mostly permanent internal "furniture"
cut out with a jig saw on ply from full scale mylar templates.
Construction is "self jigging", very quick and easy.
In common with most wood boats these days, advantage is taken
of epoxy and GRP cloth in parts of the construction to make
what is really a low maintanance wood/epoxy/composite vessel.
boat sails very well, and a delighted Dave regularly "blitzes"
