11m Aluminium Dory design
This series of boats was commissioned by a film company requiring general purpose workboats for island supply, personnel and equipment transportation, aswell as for actual filming. A flat bottom Dory hull form was developed so that the boats are quickly constructed, with a double bottom so that they are “unsinkable”. They can nest in stacks for efficient use of shipping volume. Although essentially conceived as a mono hull it was also developed as a catamaran to trasport heavy goods and as a filming platform.
The boats are built by Metal Designs Ltd in East Tamaki, Auckland using CNC watercutting technology for cutting all metal parts. The 11m monohull version weighs about a ton (light ship) and has a carrying capacity of 30 people or 2.5 tonnes.
